1 Visual Rhetoric Terminology What to Look For and How to Say It in an Analysis of Visual Texts as Aruguments Focal

point What the eye is drawn to first when you view an image. By making an object the focal point, youre highlighting its importance. Often the object thats

centered is the focal point. 2 The focal point can be achieved through the use of focus, color, arrangement, lines or

other considerations of layout that draw the viewers attention to a particular area of the visual. Foreground front area Background back area 3

6 Juxtapositi on When images are arranged in a sequence, you should pay

attention to where theyre placed & what surrounds them. Images placed side by side, in front of or in back of one another are juxtaposed 7

Juxtaposed images can make many meanings: they can highlight the difference between two pictures, they can create irony, they

can establish continuity in mood or tone, 8 9 Repetition/ Patterns

Repeating an image or like image to add significance to it or add meaning. 10 Symbolism

Visual texts can also use symbolism allowing one image or object to signify another to make meaning. 11

12 Text and/or Graphics Of course in many visual arguments the words or graphics in conjunction with the images are also significant. Some considerations when analyzing the text are:

Font type and size Content Color Arrangement 13 14 Put your analytical knowledge to

work What techniques are at work in this visual? What affect is created by each technique?
