Le Quatorze Juillet - NattaLingo

Le Quatorze Juillet - NattaLingo

Le Quatorze Juillet Jo Rhys-Jones (Kingswear Primary 2008) On the 14th July 1789, there was a riot outside the Bastille prison in Paris. The prison was stormed, the prisoners were

freed and the governor was killed. It was the start of the French Revolution. Do you know who this is? Do you know what she is

holding? Marianne is the symbol of France. Do you know who or what are the symbols for Britain?

Or any other countries? There were only 7 prisoners in the Bastille at the time. You can find many strange facts about

the Bastille prison from http://www.chezjim.com/bastille/ So why did it start a revolution? In 1789 most of the

people of France were very poor and some were starving. They were ruled by King Louis XVI and Queen MarieAntoinette.

It is said they were so rich and so distanced from the people, that when they were told The people are starving, they have no bread

Marie-Antoinette replied. Let them eat cake Why do you think she

may have said that? The King and Queen were executed along with many other nobles and aristocrats during the Revolution and years of Terror that followed. After the revolution a

document was drawn up, declaring the rights of citizens. It stated that all men are equal A song was written

called La Marseillaise. It is the French national anthem. You can hear it and read the lyrics at http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/marseill.html

In France le 14 juillet is a national holiday! If you would like to find out more: http://www.ambafrance-uk.org/History-The-French-Revolution-1789.html and
